The Associated Press is reporting:

Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.

2008 Democratic Convention Watch:

06/02/08:

MSNBC: 34 members of the House to endorse Obama tomorrow.

With the DNC RBC seating of MI and FL delegates, I think its fair to say, considering the Chuck Todd math, that it is over, and the Dems have a nominee in Barack Obama. He’s ours.

PS: I love Jason Mraz and Chuck Todd. And isn’t Harold Ickes a dick? Props to Wexler, Levin, and Brazille, who I thought were outstanding. And a big time hug for the hardwork done by Phil McNamara at the DNC.

2008 Democratic Convention Watch: On Wednesday, Barack Obama added DNC delegates DNC Pat Waak (CO), DNC Meredith Woods-Smith (OR), and DNC Wayne Kinney (OR). Today, Obama added DNC Gail Rasmussen (OR). Hillary Clinton added DNC Eileen Macoll (WA).

MSNBC’s First Read: Obama picked up the support of West Virginia congressman and superdelegate Alan Mollohan. Obama now actually leads Clinton 4-3 in superdelegate endorsements in a state she won by 41 percentage points. Additionally, the Obama supporters are all elected officials, including Sen. Robert Byrd. Gov. Joe Manchin is the only elected superdelegate not to have endorsed yet.

Clinton got Washington state party vice chair Eileen Macoll, which we reported on earlier. In First Thoughts, we mentioned the Obama pick up of Gail Rasmussen from Oregon.

The NBC NEWS Delegate Counts:
PLEDGED: Obama 1,649 to 1,500
SUPERDELEGATES: Obama 321.5 to 284.5

Political Wire: Marc Ambinder confirms reports that the Obama campaign has “begun to bank delegates.”

“Sources close to the campaign estimate that as many as three dozen Democratic superdelegates have privately pledged to announce their support for Obama on June 4 or 5. The campaign is determined that Obama not end the first week in June without securing the support of delegates numbering 2026 — or 2210, as the case may be.”

2008 Democratic Convention Watch: Since Sunday, Obama has picked up four delegates, DNC delegates Nancy Drummond (WY), Brian Schatz (HI), Kari Luna (HI) and James Burns (HI).

ABC News: Sen. Barack Obama gives Hillary Clinton the benefit of the doubt that she had no hidden meaning when she invoked the assassination of Bobby Kennedy as an explanation for remaining in the Democratic presidential race.

“I have learned that when you are campaigning for as many months as Sen. Clinton and I have been campaigning,” he told the Puerto Rico radio station Isla, “sometimes you get careless in terms of the statements that you make. And I think that is what happened here.

“Sen. Clinton says that she did not intend any offense by it,” he added, “and I would take her at her word on that.”

2008 Democratic Convention Watch: On Saturday, Hillary Clinton netted an additional delegate, Verna Cleveland (GA). Obama netted 3, Stephen Leeds (GA), W. Patrick Goggles (WY), and Tony Knowles (AK).

CNN: The leader of Colombia’s largest leftist rebel group is dead, a spokesman for the nation’s defense ministry said Saturday.

Washington Post: Dick Martin, the zany half of the comedy team whose “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” took television by storm in the 1960s, making stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin and creating such national catch-phrases as “Sock it to me!” has died. He was 86.
