Gay Pride March Takes To The Streets Of Rome

Brno, Czech Republic: At least 20 people were injured when the Czech Republic’s first ever Gay Pride parade was attacked by rightwing extremists armed with tear gas even before the event was due to begin in the city of Brno.

Havana, Cuba: Cuba’s first gay pride parade was abruptly cancelled yesterday, moments before it was to begin.

Huntsville, Alabama: The last Gay Pride event in Huntsville was a picnic in Maple Hill Cemetery 12 years ago that drew 450 people. The most recent one – a rally Saturday afternoon sponsored by the North Alabama Pride Coalition in Big Spring International Park – attracted only a couple of dozen people, no protesters and no television cameras.

Telegraph: A former head of Mossad has warned that Israel has 12 months in which to destroy Iran’s nuclear programme or risk coming under nuclear attack itself. He also hinted that Israel might have to act sooner if Barack Obama wins the US presidential election.

Shabtai Shavit, an influential adviser to the Israeli parliament’s defence and foreign affairs committee, told The Sunday Telegraph that time was running out to prevent Iran’s leaders getting the bomb.

Mr Shavit, who retired from the Israeli intelligence agency in 1996, warned that he had no doubt Iran intended to use a nuclear weapon once it had the capability, and that Israel must conduct itself accordingly.

“The time that is left to be ready is getting shorter all the time,” he said in an interview. CONTINUE READING

Much has been made of Barack Obama’s comments that he would talk to our enemies, pivoting as a policy shift of not even acknowledging the mere existence of the original Axis of Evil (Iran, Iraq and North Korea) and certainly not negotiating with them to change their policies. Since we’ve effectively blown Iraq to pieces, potentially taking North Korea off the list with this policy change today leaves only Iran as the Axis of Evil in today’s world.

The Bush Administration is chomping at the bit to bomb Iran before January, and if they do, there will be hell to pay. In the early 1950s, the U.S. sought to have better relations with the leadership of Iran, so we took it upon ourselves to stage a coup and insert a more America-friendly leader, the Shah. This action ultimately turned a generation of Iranians against the U.S. – or, as Ron Paul would call it, blowback – and led to the Iranian Hostage Crisis in 1979 and the ultimate overthrow of the Shah, led by the Ayatollah Khomeini. Now, with tensions increasing again, and with a new generation of Iranians having a negative view of the U.S., what would happen if the U.S. were to bomb Iran? And what would be the Iranian response? If we bomb Iran, we’ve literally screwed ourselves.

Times Online: An Israeli border policeman prompted scenes of panic at a Tel Aviv airport this afternoon by committing suicide at a farewell ceremony for President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and his wife, Carla Bruni.

All protocol was dropped as the man’s body fell from a high vantage point and a shot rang out. Mr Sarkozy and Ms Bruni were surrounded by their secret service agents and hastily bundled aboard their plane.

Security guards for Ehud Olmert pulled out their handguns and hustled the Israeli Prime Minister and his entourage into waiting bullet-proof limousines.

When the incident ended, however, Mr Olmert and Shimon Peres, the Israeli President, boarded the Sarkozy plane to say a proper goodbye.

AFP: The UN atomic watchdog chief warned on Saturday that an attack on Iran over its controversial nuclear programme would turn the region into a fireball, as Tehran rejected an Israeli strike as “impossible.”Mohamed ElBaradei also warned that he would not be able to continue in his role as International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general should the Islamic republic be attacked.

His stark comments came as Iran stressed yet again that it will not negotiate with world powers over its nuclear programme if it is required to suspend its controversial uranium enrichment.

“A military strike (against Iran) would in my opinion be worse than anything else … It would transform the Middle East region into a ball of fire,” ElBaradei said in an interview with Al-Arabiya television.

New York Times: Israel carried out a major military exercise earlier this month that American officials say appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Several American officials said the Israeli exercise appeared to be an effort to develop the military’s capacity to carry out long-range strikes and to demonstrate the seriousness with which Israel views Iran’s nuclear program.

More than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters participated in the maneuvers, which were carried out over the eastern Mediterranean and over Greece during the first week of June, American officials said.

AP: Jim McKay elegantly covered competitions from badminton to barrel jumping. Yet he may best be remembered for that grim day at the Munich Olympics when he broke the news with three simple words: “They’re all gone.”

The groundbreaking sportscaster died Saturday of natural causes at his farm in Monkton, Md. He was 86.

AFP: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad predicted on Monday that Muslims would uproot “satanic powers” and repeated his controversial belief that Israel will soon disappear, the Mehr news agency reported.”I must announce that the Zionist regime (Israel), with a 60-year record of genocide, plunder, invasion and betrayal is about to die and will soon be erased from the geographical scene,” he said.

“Today, the time for the fall of the satanic power of the United States has come and the countdown to the annihilation of the emperor of power and wealth has started.”

Since taking the presidency in August 2005, Ahmadinejad has repeatedly provoked international outrage by predicting Israel is doomed to disappear.

“I tell you that with the unity and awareness of all the Islamic countries all the satanic powers will soon be destroyed,” he said to a group of foreign visitors ahead of the 19th anniversary of the death of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
